The plot of "Lost Signals" takes place at the beginning of the Revelation short story.

A large group of humans—small relative to the population of the Syndicated Systems—leave their home space in the face of widespread violence and death. Their convoy of ships is the first mission across the Deep Space Well in recorded history, and many did not believe the multi-year journey through such a dark space was possible.

Years into the crossing, a NAV/COMS expert on one of the ships discovers an anomaly—a series of signals from an apparently intelligent source. In a dark space where, with current technology, no communications can enter or exit, these lost signals inspire a renewed curiosity into the history of the Well and lead to many groundbreaking discoveries.
